What are Your Dog's Special Skills?

Maybe you've seen them on TV or on the Internet: dogs that can paint, sing, act, and do other things that a dog shouldn't be able to do. Uggie, the newest member of this group of remarkable dogs, reportedly has a good sense of drama.

And if you're still not convinced that dogs are talented, well, you're actually pretty astute! But if the thought of having your dog's name on the marquee keeps nagging at you, keep on reading.

The Real Story Behind Dogs With Amazing Talents

Dogs don't have the acting chops to star in a film. They are not musicians or singers and they cannot paint. The bottom line is exactly that. In order to accomplish certain tasks, dogs need to be trained.

Training a dog for a specific role in a film or to paint a masterpiece is not unlike from training it to perform basic commands like sit and roll over. A dog may be able to teach himself some tricks, but it's highly unlikely he'll do it without training.

Doggy Performer Training

Uggie would practise acting for as much as 15 hours a day when he was in training. What ultimately won him the Golden Globe was the ability that took him the longest to master.

Uggie's final preparation for his audition was to learn how to pretend dead and remain still. Uggie moved in with his trainer because the training was so rigorous that he had to leave his human family.

Comparatively speaking, teaching a dog to paint is easier than teaching it to play dead. Naturally, it all depends on your desired outcome when Picasso paints. You will need to show him how to properly hold the paintbrush and how to dip it into the paint if you want him to use it while painting with his mouth.

Repetition is the key to success. To paint like Picasso, you must first put the brush in his mouth, then bring it to the paint, and then apply it to the canvas.

As an alternative, you can put some thick socks on Picasso's front paws and that should do the trick. Put some paint on the floor and have him walk around the canvas in it. He may be taught to draw with his paws if you drag them along the ground.

Singing canines are, well, just plain ridiculous. When they hear music, a lot of dogs start howling and making a racket. After repeated exposure, the dog's howling and noise will begin to synchronise with the music. It's hard to think of anything further to add to this 'talent' performance.

What Happens When Skill Meets Instinct

Some canines have "talents" that are consistent with their innate tendencies. A Labrador retriever cross named Sasha performed in a talent show by jumping over a moving platform.

Even while it was endearing, that wasn't actual skill. Sasha's first inclination is usually to leap over everything in her path. In order to prevent harm while on the run, free-roaming dogs must often leap over obstacles.

Applying Your Dog's Skills for the Greater Good

When you teach your dog a new skill, you'll both benefit in two ways. For one, when you put your dog's skills to good use, he'll finally feel like his life has meaning. Read also: Using an Electric Dog Training Collar to Train the Recall

Dogs thrive on routine and enjoy human company. Pascal will be happy to show off for you as long as you give him positive feedback after his performances. Pascal will continue doing it indefinitely if he is constantly praised for it.

The second constructive use of Pascal's abilities is to teach him to obey commands so that he can become a Canine Good Citizen. Your community can benefit from his love even more once he's completed the Canine Good Citizen training programme.

He may participate in a companion therapy programme at a retirement community, hospital, or hospice, or he could volunteer with an organisation that's working to show the public that not all dogs are dangerous or aggressive. Read also: Dog Foods You Should Avoid
