Dog owners and trainers vigorously dispute the merits of various training collars, with many taking the position that the devices are inhumane and ineffective.

The remote training collar allows the trainer to shock the dog by sending an electric pulse to the collar via a handheld transmitter. This prevents the dog from continuing with its unwanted behaviour and allows the trainer to grab his attention.
Because of the difficulty in gauging the level of pain, these collars have been criticised for being inhumane and harmful to the animal. The dog may become confused and unable to connect the shock with the intended outcome. Of course, that kind of muddled thinking is useless.
As an illustration, say you call your dog but he doesn't respond, so you zap him. If he associates the pain with being called, then each time you call him, you may elicit a fearful or even hostile response from him.
