How to Teach Your Dog a Few Easy Tricks

Whether you've just gotten a new puppy or an adult dog, the greatest way to bond with him and have some fun is to teach him some simple dog training techniques.

You can teach your dog a wide variety of tricks, some of which are rather complex; nonetheless, it's best practise to start with easy tricks regardless of the dog's breed.
You and your dog should have fun learning new tricks together, but remember that if you make the process exciting enough and back it up with a good reward, you will also be teaching your dog a vital lesson in obedience.

Although your dog can learn a wide variety of skills with proper training, novice trainers should begin with basic verbal commands like "sit," "stay," and "lay down."

Even though these aren't really tricks, teaching them to your dog will make your life much easier in the long run when it comes to managing your pet.

One of the best and simplest techniques to teach your dog when beginning "serious" dog training is "hello" or a basic hand shake. Even the largest of dogs, like a Great Dane, will look adorable while executing this trick, and it's one that your dog is likely to enjoy doing because it's so in tune with their natural instincts.

After you've taught your dog to sit by pressing down on his rump and giving the order "sit," you should kneel or sit in front of him, reach out your hand, and leave it there for a few seconds.

Then, pick up his paw, position it in your outstretched hand, and give it a little shake; then, set his paw back down and, with a broad grin on your face, toss him a reward. Remember that dog training tactics are a two-way street, so keeping a cheerful countenance is essential (your dog will pick up on your emotions). Do this as often as you can and don't give up.

After a little while, your dog will respond to your outstretched hand by raising his paw for you to hold; at this point, you can gently shake his paw to greet him. Everyone in the room will exclaim "Ahh" in amazement, but children especially enjoy this. Read also: Dog Foods You Should Avoid

Have you ever been out and about and seen a dog strolling with its owner, the two of them together toting a bag or newspaper?

That's awesome, and teaching it to your dog won't take long at all. Many dogs have a natural inclination to carry objects in their mouths, such as a little ball or stick; all that's required is a little training to ensure they don't run off with the wrong objects.

Sit, take, come, and release are the four primary commands in this dog training technique. Sit your dog down in front of you as before, and after he's there, use the word "take" to encourage him to put the straps of the bag or the rolled-up newspaper in his mouth.

After a minute or so, use the word "release" to gently take the object away from him. When your dog does this, praise him and reward him with a goodie.

Perform this exercise repeatedly over the next few days, and your dog will eventually learn to "take" and "release" an object on command instead of requiring you to physically place it in his mouth.

Once more, be sure to praise your dog for good behaviour. Finally, while your dog is seated and holding the object, go about 10 yards away (while saying "stay" if necessary), pat your leg, and tell him "here." When he returns with the item, reward him once again. Read also: Taking Your Dog for a Walk

If the object is dropped before he reaches you, have him sit and start over. The speed with which he learns to bring you the item in his mouth will astound you. The internet is rife with publications detailing dozens upon dozens of other dog training tricks that you can teach your pet.
