Thalia, a pregnant patient who came to my chiropractic clinic around six months ago, just gave birth. She had been experiencing some minor lower back pain for some time, but the pain had recently increased to the point that she felt compelled to give us a call. In my 37 years of experience, I've seen this happen many times.
A pregnant woman may benefit greatly from chiropractic therapy. In this piece, we will look at four cases when chiropractic therapy might be beneficial during pregnancy.
1. Naturally lessen your back and hip discomfort
Lower back discomfort is a common symptom of pregnancy and affects the vast majority of expecting mothers. The strain on the spine and pelvic joints is increased when a person's waistline expands. The sacroiliac joints, located in the pelvis, take on more weight as the pregnancy progresses.
Misalignment, inflammation, and discomfort in these joints are all possible outcomes. Pregnancy lower back discomfort may be alleviated by chiropractic care because to the safe, gentle adjustments that help realign the pelvis.
Improve foetal posture by encouraging correct pelvic alignment.
Throughout pregnancy, the baby will move about in the uterus. If the mother's pelvis isn't properly positioned, the baby may have trouble achieving normal mobility.
The goal of chiropractic care during pregnancy is to maintain proper pelvic alignment and sacroiliac joint mobility to ensure that the baby is in the best possible position for birth. Research shows that labour and delivery go more smoothly and quickly for women who get chiropractic therapy throughout pregnancy.
2. Refine how you go about doing simple things
When a pregnant woman's discomfort is alleviated, she is able to do more of the things she normally would. Pregnancy puts a woman under a lot of stress. She can get better rest, perform better at work, and do household tasks when she's not in pain. There will be no need for the mother to take potentially harmful pain drugs.
Get rid of the aching in your lower back that you've been experiencing ever since giving birth.
Postpartum back discomfort is common for many women. Decades after giving birth, I still see women who complain, "My back has caused me trouble ever since I had my kid." This is usually the result of a misaligned pelvis and irritable sacroiliac joints. Assessment by chiropractors often reveals a disease treatable by spinal manipulation.
Thanks to multiple chiropractic adjustments to realign her pelvis, Thalia's lower back discomfort has completely disappeared. She continued to see a chiropractor intermittently for the rest of her pregnancy, and gave birth to a healthy baby girl with little to no complications.
3. Help for Pregnancy-Related Back Pain
In fact, between 50 and 72 percent of pregnant women complain of low back discomfort. Pregnant women who have back discomfort are more likely to miss work than those who do not. The pain in their backs may be debilitating for some women, with studies showing that 10% will suffer for at least two years.
4. Pregnancy-related back pain is a serious issue
The causes of pregnancy-related back discomfort and a simple, successful treatment strategy are discussed here.
Most people would agree that if a woman has back pain during pregnancy or the postpartum period while she is breastfeeding, neither medicine nor surgery is the solution. In 2004, Americans spent $26.1 billion on remedies for pregnancy-related back discomfort.
Due to concerns for the health of both the mother and the unborn child, invasive surgical procedures and the use of drugs are generally avoided during pregnancy. Chiropractic care, thankfully, is one such alternative.
As a tried and true way of treating back pain, chiropractic therapy is a safe, non-invasive option for pregnant women. During pregnancy, a woman's body goes through several changes, and the lumbar spine and pelvis are especially vulnerable to misalignment and inappropriate movement.
The lumbar vertebrae are the vertebrae in the lowest part of the spine. The pelvis consists of the sacrum, which is the center tailbone, and the two wing bones, the Ilium.
Any of the lumbar vertebrae and pelvic bones might undergo inappropriate movement and misalignments of their joints due to the weight and location of the developing foetus. Incorrect biomechanical alterations in the low back and pelvis may be diagnosed by a chiropractic examination.
In this case, the pregnant woman may get safe and mild chiropractic adjustments (also called chiropractic manipulation) to alleviate her lower back discomfort.
In 2009, 78 pregnant women took part in a study to assess the effectiveness of chiropractic therapy for pregnancy-related back pain. Chiropractors were able to help 51% of those with disabilities.
Seventy-three percent saw significant relief from their discomfort. Eleven months later, 8 out of 10 respondents said their condition had improved much or somewhat.
Women who get chiropractic therapy during pregnancy had a shorter labour and less pain after delivery, according to the available research.
